This work was concerned with two aspects of the still unknown nucleosynthesis of 180Ta. First, a possible production in the s-process was considered. A radioactive 179Ta sample was prepared which allowed for the measurement of the so far unknown thermal neutron capture cross section σn.γ(179Ta) = 932±62 b and the resonance integral Ires(179Ta) = 1216±69 b. Second, the survival of the freshly produced 180Ta nuclei in the stellar environment was investigated. A possible destruction mechanism is given by thermal population of intermediate states having decay channels to both, the stable isomer and the radioactive ground state. As a result of the Coulomb excitation of 180Ta using α-particles and protons an intermediate state was found at 0.6 - 2.2 MeV excitation energy. Current stellar models suggest synthesis temperatures below 3.1·108K which lead to a negligible population of intermediate states above 1 MeV. Thus, the data does not allow stringent conclusions about the destruction in the stellar environment. However, an s-process origin seems to be possible. Furthermore, the data suggest the existence of undiscovered isomers in 184Re and 180Ta. The latter is leading to consequences for the population probability of the stable isomer in the s-process.
