The investigation of rapidly evolving late stages of the lives of stars-by use of direct multidimensional hydrodynamic simulations-brings into question assumptions generally used in the theory of stellar evolution. A mathematical and a physical analysis of the origin of these differences is presented. Quantitative predictions of nucleosynthesis yields and presupernova characteristics will require attention to these new physical effects. Implications for interpreting the X grains are discussed as an example.
