The main stages in the bombardment of solar-system matter by high-energy cosmic-ray particles are examined on the basis of isotopic abundances in meteorites. Quantitative calculations show that the most intense processes of nuclear and radiative-chemical transmutation occurred during the nucleosynthesis periods about 11 and 4.6 billion years ago. It is argued that many problems concerning the differentiation of elements in the protoplanetary nebula cannot be solved without first developing a model for the bombardment of protoplanetary matter by solar and galactic cosmic rays.
