A large population of supersoft X-ray sources has been detected in M31 with ROSAT, XMM and Chandra. More than half of these sources to are intermittent or transient. How many of them are post-outburst classical or recurrent novae? With this question in mind we compared our recent images of M31 with images taken in past years. We also cross-correlated the observed supersoft X-ray sources with a recent nova survey in M31. So far, only one supersoft X-ray source turns out to have been a classical nova. This confirms that only a small fraction, probably not exceeding 20%, of classical novae become supersoft X-ray sources for more than ~2 of years. Most transient X-ray sources of this type belong to a different class and are not novae.
