The observation has quite often been made (references below) that in specific igneous rocks and minerals, the concentration of Cs varies much more widely than that of Rb. Such observations have heretofore usually been expressed in qualitative terms. A quantitative comparison of the dispersion relationship of the concentration of these two elements is facilitated provided both follow or approximate the same type of statistical distribution. Lognormality was assumed by Ahrens (1954) when comparing the dispersion of Cs and Rb in New England granites (see Fig. 21 of that paper). In that particular work, the number of specimens was small (28) and though the dispersion relationship Cs > Rb is probably qualitatively and semi-quantitatively correct, the comparison is not quantitatively rigorous because of the small number of specimens. In the present study, which is concerned with microcline, a much larger number of specimens is considered.
