A theoretical model is presented for the nonresonant heating of a plasma by fast magnetoacoustic waves in the case of nonresonant particles whose velocity is much less than Alfven velocity. The nonresonant interaction with waves is associated with the presence of a low-frequency 'tail' of the spectral function of magnetic disturbances. Particular mechanisms for the formation of the tail are examined, and astrophysical and geophysical applications of the model are examined (e.g., heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of thermal ions in the earth's magnetosphere).
