An expression for a nonlinear wavenumber shift of whistlers is derived following the dispersion relation of Chakraborty et al. (1986). Numerical estimates are made of the wavenumber shift of a proton whistler in the ionosphere assuming an electric field of about 0.1 V/m. The variation of the wavenumber shift with change in the ion density and whistler wave power is graphically studied. It is found that the wavenumber shifts of a whistler for both left and right circularly polarized waves become significant when the frequencies of the waves are nearly equal to the ion-cyclotron frequency.
