The application of nonlinear mixing of EM waves to plasma density probing is studied for the case of an inhomogeneous isotropic and collisionless plasma; particular values are assumed for the ratio of electron thermal velocity to the speed of light and the local characteristic length for electron density variation. Two types of Langmuir wave excitation are found, one associated with resonant wave mixing and the other with nonlinear conversion occurring at the critical surface where the difference frequency of the two EM waves equals the local plasma frequency. The nonlinear conversion effect may be used with radar facilities for ionospheric scattering experiments.
