The method of varying-scale expansions is used to obtain a Schroedinger
equation describing the propagation of nonlinear modulations of a
harmonic symmetrical mode along a plane magnetic layer in an
incompressible fluid. The stability of plane waves and the propagation
of solitons in the solar photosphere are discussed.
