Equations describing the nonlinear interaction of spiral density waves in flat galaxies are obtained by the method of averaged Lagrangians. Galaxies are modeled by an infinitely thin gas disk. The instability of a moderate-amplitude density wave against nonlinear breakup into several trigger spiral waves is considered; the conditions whereby such instability can set in are established and its growth rate is determined. Mutual interaction of spiral density waves should be taken into account when discussing the evolution of spiral arms in galaxies.
