The author reports numerical studies of nonlinear Alfvén waves, using the Derivative Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation as a model. He has studied the evolution of a variety of initial conditions, such as envelope solitons, amplitude-modulated waves, and band-limited noise. The last two furnish models for naturally occurring Alfvén waves in an astrophysical plasma. The author has studied a collapse instability in which a wave packet becomes more intense and of smaller spatial extent. He conjectures that this instability will lead to enhanced plasma heating. The author has begun studies in which the waves are amplified by an electron beam. The aforementioned instability tends to modestly inhibit the growth of the waves.
