Equations containing terms that are quadratic with respect to perturbations are used to investigate nonlinear coupling of stellar oscillations on the assumption that self-excited radial or nonradial modes, or both, are present. A series expansion of the solution in terms of three-dimensional eigenfunctions that characterize linear oscillations in the adiabatic approximation is carried out. It is found that in some cases the problem of mode coupling can be reduced to solving a system of ordinary differential equations for the time-dependent coefficients of the cited series. A resonance effect is discussed which may cause small-scale instabilities or instabilities localized in interior layers to result in pronounced large-scale radial or nonradial oscillations.
