A third-order theory has been developed to study the instability of an infinite cylinder in the presence of a uniform axial magnetic field. By use of strained coordinates, the growth of the surface waves is calculated for wave numbers less than the critical wave number. It is observed that the perturbed surface of an infinite cylinder assumes a non-sinusoidal shape resulting in secondary waves due to energy transfer between the harmonics of different orders.
