High-energy collisional cascades in H2 initiated by collisions with streaming ions in magnetically-moderated shocks can lead to large non-thermal variations in excitation level populations. These effects are significant even for relatively low (15 km s-1) ion-neutral streaming velocities. Amended cooling functions taking this effect into account could affect shock dynamics and help explain observed line ratios.
