Tridiagonal approximate lambda operators proposed by Olson and Kunasz (1987) were introduced into a non-LTE model atmosphere code. The result was a considerable speedup of convergence and a reduction of computing time per iteration step. The convergence properties of the method are demonstrated for a realistic model with 100 non-LTE levels and 233 line transitions, showing that the introduction of the tridiagonal operator resulted in halving of the computing time.
