The non-linear evolution of unstable acoustic waves in the precursors of
cosmic ray mediated shocks with large Mach numbers results in the
formation of a host of weak shock waves. These weak shocks heat the
thermal plasma, and therefore change the parameters of the strong
large-scale shock.
