The evolution of a charged test particle injected into a strong low-frequency circularly polarized plane wave with a phase velocity greater than the velocity of light is investigated, taking into account the radiative reaction forces. The equations describing the evolution are outlined, numerical solutions are presented, and approximate arguments are provided, leading to estimates of relevant time scales and terminal energy states, and to the domain of validity of the analysis. The results obtained are discussed for the Crab pulsar. It is found that it is possible for group locking to occur in the Crab at a distance of about 200 million km from the neutron star.
