The elemental abundance pattern of noble gases Ne to Xe in the terrestrial atmosphere is very similar to the 'planetary pattern' characteristics of C chondrites, except for a deficiency of Xe by a factor of about 20. In this paper, the noble gases in siliceous microfossils from deep-sea sediments are investigated by employing a stepwise heating technique. The results for noble gases are compared to those for amorphous silica of geothermal origin and discussed in connection with the terrestrial 'missing' Xe. Selective trapping of Xe in the amorphous silica at high temperature is found, indicating the possibility that such silica is the reservoir of the missing Xe. However, quantitative calculation shows that the total amount of Xe in amorphous silica can be at most only 5-10 percent of the total missing Xe.
