We analysed a suite of fifteen highly vesicular glass samples from Teahitia and Rocard seamounts and Mehetia Island in the active hot spot area of the central Pacific, east of Tahiti.
Mehetia, which is farthest from Tahiti and probably the youngest of the three volcanoes has a 4He/3He ratio of 64,000 and thus clearly indicates a lower, relatively undegassed mantle component. The 40Ar/36Ar and 4He/3He ratios of Mehetia samples are in agreement with mixing of lower and upper mantle material.
Rocard and Teahitia Seamounts are marked by MORB-type noble gases. The 4He/3He ratios of four Rocard and two Teahitia samples are ~ 90,000. The 20Ne/22Ne and 21Ne/22Ne of up to 11.8 and 0.055, respectively, and the high 40Ar/36Ar of 15,260 exclude an important lower mantle component. High 4He/3He ratios and low He concentrations in two Rocard and four Teahitia samples indicate either (1) a third, radiogenic component, either generated within the magma since separation from the mantle source region(s) by high U, Th contents or due to the presence of subducted material in the source, or (2) large mass fractionation effects during He diffusive losses at quenching of the glasses by contact with deep sea water.
