In the last years, much progress has been achived in the description of many-body systems. I discuss one possible way to improve upon the successes of the many-body approaches by employing general principles in order to construct more reliable interactions to be used in nuclear many-body calculations. Such approaches should give us more predictive power for the description of low-energy properties of nuclei far from stability.
