Molecules, especially water, are ubiquitous and thus play a key role in the physics of cool stellar atmospheres. Effects of Non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) may strongly influence the thermal balance of molecules, but very little work has been done on this. Here we present a new approach to the NLTE treatment of water lines, the interpretation of which is particularly controversial. This methodology is developed in order to deal with the large number of levels and transitions which have to be taken into account.
