Nitrogen in lunar soils and breccias is enigmatic. It is presumably of solar wind origin but it seems to have changed its isotopic composition over the age of the solar system and the concentration seems to be much higher than that expected from solar abundance (Kerridge, 1989). In order to understand the behavior of implanted nitrogen, we made nitrogen implantation experiments. The target minerals were ilmenite and olivine. In a couple of cases, Ar (and He) was also implanted. The condition of the implantation and the results of gas release by stepped combustion are summarized in Table 1. The major release of nitrogen from ilmenite occurred at 1100 C in most cases, while that from olivine occurred at 1200 C. Implantation efficiency of nitrogen in ilmenite is much higher than that in olivine, though this may be an artifact due to charge up of olivine during implantation and/or incomplete degassing from olivine during combustion. Contrary to our expectation, implantation efficiency of nitrogen is not higher than that of Ar. The release pattern of nitrogen changes a little if Ar (and He) is implanted together with nitrogen. The nitrogen release temperature observed in this study is generally higher than that of lunar soils and breccias. Reference: Kerridge J.F.(1989) Science 245,480-486.
