The scientific program of NICMOS (Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer) is discussed. Emphasis is given to the search for an improved determination of the cosmic distance scale and cosmological parameters and extragalactic astronomy studies. The NICMOS performance levels are examined in some detail, and the NICMOS scientific instrument is briefly described, giving the most important characteristics.
