NASA and ESA - joined by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) - have collaborated since 1996 in the definition of a worthy successor to HST, the Next-Generation Space Telescope (NGST). NGST is to consist of a passively cooled, 6 m-class telescope optimised for diffraction-limited performance in the near-infrared (1-5 micron) region, but with extensions to either side into the visible (0.6-1 micron) and mid-infrared (5-28 micron) regions.
