The high spatial resolution spectra presented in this paper, reveal that two ionising mechanisms are at work in the nuclear region of NGC 6951, a galaxy which has been classified previously as a LINER. The compact central region is highly ionised, with line ratios indicative of a Seyfert nucleus. The nucleus is surrounded by an ellipse of low- ionisation giant H II regions. It seems likely, that the ellipse is in fact a circular ring, inclined with respect to the galactic plane. We find no indications from the spectra for a link between the Seyfert nucleus and the ring of HII regions.
