Optical and near-infrared observations of the merging galaxy NGC 3597 are presented. The merger has already developed into an elliptical-like object with a de Vaucouleurs brightness distribution, but intense star formation is continuing in the central 4 kpc. NGC 3597 contains a number of luminous, blue stellar clusters. Their luminosities and colors are in the range expected for young globular clusters. Although the upper limit of about 100 pc for their size is insufficient to distinguish unambiguously between compact, globularlike objects and more diffuse associations, this observation may indicate that the specific globular cluster frequency is not conserved during merging. Altogether, the observations suggest that NGC 3597 will develop into an elliptical galaxy of moderate luminosity.
