One and two dimensional data of the planetary nebula NGC 2440 are presented. From spectra obtained with the ESO Reticon System, relative line intensities have been obtained in the spectral region 6300-10,000 A. The derived total abundance of sulfur is lower than the value in the sun and in the Orion Nebula. Present available data support the idea that NGC 2440 is optically thin in the Lyman continuum. The nebula was also mapped with a JPL CCD camera through interference filters which isolated H-beta, H-alpha, forbidden N II 6584, and forbidden S III 9532 A lines. The forbidden N II/H-alpha ratio increases steadily outward, while the H-alpha/H-beta shows a smooth appearance, having almost no correlation with the hydrogen intensity maps. This fact is interpreted as an evidence that the extinction toward NGC 2440 is mainly interstellar.
