Deep U, B, V, R, and I plates of the region of the Large Magellanic Cloud containing the diffuse object NGC 1809 are examined, along with a spectrum of the center of NGC 1809 covering the wavelength range from 3700 to 7000 A with a dispersion of 123 A/mm. The results indicate that NGC 1809 is a background galaxy with a corrected emission-line velocity of 1065 + or - 30 km/s, seen through the Large Magellanic Cloud and at a distance of 21.3 Mpc (for H = 50 km/s per Mpc). The size and morphology of this object are shown to be typical of or compatible with an Sb galaxy. No relation is found between NGC 1809 and the nearby extragalactic radio source PKS 0502-696. It is concluded that NGC 1809 is a typical Sb galaxy with a relatively bright semistellar center exhibiting faint emission and surrounded by a red diffuse concentration consisting of late-type stars.
