We present a new technique for dust parameter retrieval from MGS TES data. We first use standard values previously retrieved (Smith et al 2000, Bandfield et al 2000) such as atmospheric temperature profile, dust optical depth, surface temperature and surface emissivity in a radiative transfer code to simulate spectra of outgoing radiation as would be observed by TES. We then vary each parameter to determine the sensitivity of the outgoing radiation to the value of the parameter. We also investigate the sensitivity of the radiation to parameters insufficiently considered by previous studies, and not covered in the standard retrievals, such as dust dielectric function, dust vertical distribution, and particle size distribution. The result of these calculations is a sensitivity matrix relating changes in the spectrum to variations in the parameters. This matrix is used to adjust the parameters to improve the fit to the observed spectrum. Future improvements to the radiative calculations and the resulting sensitivity matrix are discussed. We propose to use the sensitivity matrix to adjust the parameters in Mars global dust models to provide optimal agreement with observed spectra.
This project is funded by the NASA Graduate Student Research Program.
