Silicon carbide (SiC) is an important variety of cosmic dust, commonly found around carbon-rich AGB stars and is the best-studied type of presolar grain. SiC has a well-known 11 micron spectral feature which has been observed in the vicinity of carbon stars, and has been used to diagnose the parameters of their circumstellar shells. Studies of cosmic SiC have been thwarted by a lack of grain-size and grain-shape independent optical constants. New, reliable optical constants are now available over a broad wavelength range. Using these new optical constants, together with the 1-D radiative transfer code DUSTY, we investigate the effect of various stellar and circumstellar parameters on the emerging spectrum from carbon stars. In addition, we analyze the effect of grain-size and grain-shape on the 11um feature. We show that spherical grains of SiC cannot account for the observed features and discuss the limitations of studies performed using previous optical constants for SiC.
