Results of new B and V photoelectric observations of a W UMa type binary system, AW UMa, are obtained; the observations cover all phases of the light curve. All epochs of minima, including visual epochs spanning the time interval from 1963 to 1990, were collected. Both continuous and sudden orbital period changes were taken into consideration. The sum of the squares of the O-C values is lower for the sudden orbital period change approximation. There was a gap of 1119 d in the series of photoelectric observations of minima just around the time in which the period change occurred. The analysis makes it possible to diminish this critical interval to less than 307 d. A symmetrical reference light curve for the study of light curve changes is defined. The majority of light curves are classified as shallow and deep and the rest as intermediate- or extraordinary-state. Rules for the transition from one type of light curve to another and time intervals between transitions are established. A three-component model to explain the observed features of the light curve is proposed.
