Astronomical explanations for the star of Bethlehem are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the conjunction of Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars in 5 BC, and on the conjunctions of Jupiter and Regulus, and Jupiter and Venus in 2-1 BC. Astronomical calculations are compared with historical data of events surrounding the birth of Christ, including the death of Herod, the reign of Tiberius, and the Roman census. The threefold conjunction of Jupiter and Regulus in 2 BC occurred in the constellation Leo and the sun was found at the southern portion of Virgo. A Biblical interpretation of the astronomical data by Mosley and Martin (1980) is presented.
