The nonmetastable (J,K) = (9,6) ammonia maser in NGC 7538 at 18.5 GHz has not been observed since its discovery by Madden et al. in 1986. Employing the expanded frequency coverage of the EVLA, we observed this maser with an interferometer for the first time. We did not detect the maser in either of two epochs of observation separated by 14 months. We discuss the limits on brightness and angular size imposed by the current data. We compare these results with the measured compact size and known variability of the comparable ammonia masers in W49 and W51. The significance of this rare maser occurring in the rich maser environment in NGC 7538 is considered. Plans for future observations are also discussed.
