We will report a detailed study of the timing and spectral characteristics of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations observed in the persistent source 4U 1636-53.
These phenomena are very likely due to a marginally stable nuclear burning on the neutron star surface. If confirmed, this would be the first time that quasi-periodic variability in the persistent X-ray flux is identified with a process on the neutron star surface rather than the accretion disk.
