Quantitative methods are developed for determining the aberrations of objectives, utilizing interference effects. Zonal aberrations are found by several methods to ascertain the curvature of the light front and its deviation from a perfect sphere. Astigmatism and coma are also ascertained by these techniques. The methods are applied to two transits, a refracting telescope, and a parabolic mirror. Parameters reflecting the quality of a lens are discussed and compared. The methods and results are applied to objectives in various observatories on the basis of literature data.
