New merit values for lens performance m=Σ(Qh)2 and
m¯=Σ(Qh¯)2 were introduced, where Q is Abbe's
invariant, h is paraxial ray height and the bar indicates principal ray.
The studies showed that m and m¯ are useful for the evaluation of
potentialities of lens systems and for the optimization of lens designs.
