This paper describes a two-stage (He-3)/(He-4) refrigerator operating at 0.3 K (He-3), and optionally at 1 K (He-4). The new refrigerator represents an improvement over the He-3 refrigerator of Torre and Chanin (1985) in that the addition of a second He-4 stage makes it possible to avoid pumping on the main liquid helium bath. No moving parts and external links (except for the electric leads) are involved, making it possible to exploit the condensation and cryosorption cycles of He-4 and He-3 without pumping on the main He-4 bath. Compared to standard bolometers cooled at pumped He-4 temperature, the sensitivity increase in bolometers obtained by operating at temperatures of 1 K and 0.3 K represents a large step forward in applications both for large ground telescopes and for stratospheric balloons.
