Twelve EXOs (Extreme X-ray Objects) have been found in the ECDFS field, one of four fields that comprise the one-square-degree deep optical and infrared MUSYC survey (MUltiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile). These EXOs are all X-ray bright but optically invisible at the R 27 mag (AB) limit of our optical imaging; all have bright counterparts in K-band (K<22 mag, AB) and IRAC (3.6-8 microns) imaging. They are clearly redder than R-K>5 (AB), and the space density is roughly consistent with that for EXOs found previously in the GOODS fields. The X-ray brightness means these are almost certainly AGN; the optical faintness means that not only must the AGN be obscured but the host galaxy light must be suppressed. Possible explanations include that the AGN are at very high redshift (z>6), or sit in very dusty and/or sub-luminous host galaxies at more moderate redshifts (z 2-3). We interpret the spectral energy distributions based on the multiwavelength photometric data for all 12 EXOs, and report on recent GNIRS spectra of the three IR-brightest.
