A simple, digital phase-lock scheme for the frequency stabilization of millimeter-wave Gunn oscillators is demonstrated. The loop circuit is built around a new GaAs phase-frequency comparator and is much simpler, more reliable, and superior in performance compared to its classical analog counterpart, especially in frequency-agile operations. The system should be useful in such diverse applications as millimeter-wave communications, plasma diagnostics, laboratory spectroscopy, and, of course, mm/sub-mm radioastronomy.
