Results are presented from a detailed analysis of the Moessbauer spectra of the smallest (not greater than 80 microns) fraction of the Luna-16 regolith, using difference spectra to determine the mineral forms of iron in this regolith. The percentages of Fe found in various minerals were as follows: olivine, 19.0; pyroxene, 32.0; glass, 18.2; ilmenite, 11.2; ulvoespinel, 5.6; and metallic Fe, 14.0. Conclusions concerning the maturity of the regolith were drawn, based on the ratio of structured (olivine + pyroxene) and unstructured (glass) forms of iron.
