An assessment is made of the new console technology employed at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. A computer uses solid state and serial techniques to minimize cabling expenses and hazards to the operator. In place of a keyboard and customized control panel there are interactive CRT video computer terminals that minimize capital and maintenance expenses while making the human interface simpler and less prone to error. The control systems allows hundreds of input and output functions to be controlled and polled from a single asynchronous computer port. The solid state relay (SSR) controller comprises a microprocessor, a small amount of memory, a programmable interface adapter, and an asynchronous communications interface adapter, all mounted on the same board with a bank of SSRs. The host computer sends a command string to the SSR microprocessor, and the microprocessor decodes the command string, executes the functions required, and sends an acknowledgment back to the host.
