The possibility of utilizing small black holes with masses much less than the mass of the earth for gravitational controlled thermonuclear power production is discussed. Evidence for the existence of small black holes is reviewed, and methods for detecting such objects based on gravitational effects, accretion effects, or self-luminosity are considered. Four potential means of generating usable energy are examined: the gravitational heating of matter accreting onto black holes; conversion of self-annihilation radiation; thermonuclear fusion of matter contained in the gravitational potential well of black holes; gravitational scattering drawing on the kinetic or rotational energy of black holes.
