Solar Magnetic Fields: Measurements, Sun: Polarimetry
Scientific paper
This paper describes the significance of the measurement of solar vector magnetic fields, the requirements for instrumentation and the basic principles of vector magnetographs. Then it introduces the instruments of birefringent filter-based and spectrograph-based. The merits and shortcomings of these two types of instruments are compared. A short description of the basic principles of Stokesmeters is presented. A brief introduction of the Stokes polarimetry is given.
