Results are presented of calculations of the spin evolution of a magnetized neutron star in a wide low-mass X-ray binary (LMXRB) with an evolved secondary star. In these calculations the history of the mass-accretion rate is obtained from a semianalytical description of the evolution of the LMXRB, and the magnetic field of the neutron star is assumed to decay on a variable timescale. The torques associated with the accretion have been derived from Ghosh and Lamb's (1979) model of disk accretion. Adopting the idea that these LMXRBs are the progenitors of the wide low-mass binary radiopulsars, it is found that the relation between spin and orbital period of the binary radio pulsars PSR 1855 + 09 and PSR 1953 + 29 is in good agreement with these models if it is assumed that after the formation of the neutron star its magnetic field decayed exponentially on a timescale of a few Myr to a bottom value of about 500 MG. From the orbital and spin period of the binary radio pulsar PSR 1953 + 29 an upper limit of about 12 Myr is derived for the initial decay time-scale of the magnetic field of the neutron star.
