Neutron activation analysis (NAA) has in recent years found wide applications for the determination of minor and trace elements in coal (which may be potential pollutants) because of its ability to determine many elements simultaneously and nondestructively. Activation analysis and the three basic neutron sources: (1) nuclear reactors, (2) neutron generators, and (3) radionuclide neutron sources are discussed. A review of recent literature on coal analysis is presented and attention is given to specific NAA uses such as, determination of ash content of coal, analysis of coal, fly-ash, and lignites, and determination of mercury content and iron content, in coal and U and Th content in coal and coal-ash. A comparison with other methods such as atomic absorption, optical emission spectrometry, and X-ray fluorescence is made noting that total reliance on a single analytical method for trace elements may contribute to misleading results.
