High-resolution and high-sensitivity searches for neutral hydrogen associated with the supernova remnants IC 443 and the Cygnus Loop have not revealed the presence of the high-velocity gas suggested by McKee, Cowie, and Ostriker (1978). In the case of IC 443, however, a prominent H I shell lies within the optical filaments of the remnant. It may be traced up to velocities of the order of -110 km/s and is mainly found to be approaching. The total neutral hydrogen mass associated with the shell is in excess of 700 solar masses for a distance to IC 443 of 1.5 kpc. A model that combines the radio, optical, and X-ray observations places IC 443 within a region of enhanced interstellar density.
