We propose to obtain high S/N spectroscopy and V,I,H(alpha) imaging of a new sample of low-metallicity blue compact galaxies (BCGs) from the Hamburg-SAO Survey (HSS). A smaller subsample has been preselected from spectroscopy on the KPNO 2.1m. Spectroscopy and imaging of this subsample are required to determine the evolutionary stage of these galaxies - are they young or old? If there is no evidence for an old stellar population underlying the current starburst, we are catching these systems in the act of their first generation of elemental enrichment. Their low redshifts allow spatial resolution of the distribution of metallicity, with implication for the IMF and the progression of star formation. Reconnaissance spectroscopy of a larger new sample of fainter galaxies is also proposed to search for extremely low-metallicity galaxies, which are expected with higher probability among the faint BCGs.
