The intrinsic high luminosity and the relatively small dispersion of the peak magnitude observed in Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are promising evidence that these objects can be used as cosmological distance indicators. However the determination of the cosmological parameters using Type Ia supernovae requires a good understanding of the systematic uncertainties associated with the supernovae observations in different redshifts and environments. For this reason it is very important to have a large sample of well calibrated nearby supernovae allowing to determine intrinsic supernova properties and their relation to supernova lightcurves.
During the spring of 1999 the Supernova Cosmology Project, in collaboration with scientists from different countries, including Portugal, organized a large nearby supernova campaign. The aim of this campaign was to discover and photometrically and spectroscopically follow a large sample of nearby supernovae. As a result 20 nearby SNe Ia were discovered and followed-up for about 3 months, using more than 100 nights in 25 telescopes around the world. The Portuguese time on the YALO telescope was used for the photometric follow-up and has played a crucial role in this campaign. Resulting data is now being analysed at CENTRA-IST, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Stockholm University and Paris Universities. We report the main results of the work taking place at CENTRA-IST and plans for the future. Namely we comment on the building of a Nearby Supernova Factory, as a new extensive systematic search of nearby supernovae, planned to start in 2003.
