The effective absorption cross sections of near-UV transitions of CS2 and SO2 at a series of temperatures between 197 and 296 K are determined experimentally to provide a basis for interpreting balloon-borne UV-spectrometer observations of Venus (Rigaud et al., 1983) made at the same resolution (0.2 nm). A stepwise-driven 200-mm-focal-length grating monochromator is used to measure the absorption of light from a deuterium source by gas in a 27-mm-internal-diameter glass cylinder with separately-filled 45 and 11-cm-long chambers, with resolution 0.2 nm at 580 nm. The data are presented in tables and graphs and discussed.
