We determine the near-surface solar sound-speed profiles using frequencies of high-degree modes determined from ring-diagram analyses of isolated active and nearby quiet areas. We have analyzed MDI full-disc resolution data for this work. In order to be able to invert high-degree modes obtained from the ring-diagram analysis, we have had to make several improvements in the inversion codes.
